The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak Book Review

The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak
Publisher: Dial
Release Date: September 30, 2014

This is the book that makes grownups say silly things.

I admit it, I heard about this book and I was highly skeptical. For one, it was being touted as this highly original idea. Picture book with no pictures? How extraordinary. Also, celebrity author. Top that off with comedian celebrity author. My radar was on high alert for yet another terrible book by an author who thinks writing for kids is simple and the publisher knows they can make money off of it, good or not.

I am pleased to report that this was very well done, although I hesitate to call this a "picture book". It is a book in a picture book format, but without the pictures can it truly be called that? However, since there is no other category for it to go into, we shall let it stand. Along the same vein as Elephant and Piggie's We Are In A Book and There's A Monster At the End of this Book, this story relies on audience participation and lots of silly words. And as we know, if a book engages its young readers and says lots of goofy things, kids will love it. And so do I.
