Benny Breakiron #3: The Twelve Trials of Benny Breakiron by Peyo, Yvan Delporte, Will Maltaite, and François Walthéry
Publisher: PapercutZ
Release Date: January 21, 2014
Benny Breakiron is basically a superhero, with super strength, super speed, and the ability to jump out of an airplane and survive with a parachute. When Monsieur Dussiflard gets himself into trouble with a land deed worth billions of dollars, Benny joins him in a whirlwind trip around the world to find the other holders of the deed before the bad guys find them first.
Although graphic novels for kids are definitely popular, I have to wonder at the wisdom of translating this book into English. Although there were occasional words that were translated with asterisks at the bottom of the pages, this was neither consistent nor necessary. For example, why not just say french fries instead of using the French word and the using the asterisk, especially when other French words were not translated.
On the other hand, I think this book would be fantastic in French for a student studying the language. The story itself is simple, predictable, yet engaging enough to keep the interest. However, for the native English speaking child, I think it would just be a little strange with far too many unfamiliar words to make this appealing to the average elementary school student, which is who this would typically be aimed towards.
